ABOUT

Using video, photography, audio, and words, I conceptualize and develop projects (exhibitions, film, or written pieces) that revolve around culture (in a broad sense) or that center on more specific social issues, mainly racism, racialization, othering, and identity.

I have an academic background in racism and ethnicity studies, an advocacy background in migrant domestic worker rights, and a professional background in the creative and communication fields. Nigerian and Lebanese, I currently reside between Beirut and Lagos.

Mixed Feelings is a multimedia project* that explores racism through the lived experiences of Lebanese of African or Asian heritage. While working on Mixed Feelings, I met many inspiring people who are not Lebanese but who related to the project, and who offered their time, stories, and support throughout. Many were born and have lived, worked, and studied in the country for decades, yet are denied citizenship or permanent residence based on nationality laws rooted in patrilineality. Below are some photos they have contributed to this small offshoot project. Please get in touch if you'd also like to share your story.

Yuqal ("They Say") is a documentary about a little-known yet over-a-century-old neighbourhood in Mina, in the north of Lebanon, called Hosh El Abeed, which translates to "Quarter of the Slaves". The film introduces the audience to some members of the original families of Hosh, to their stories, daily life, and interactions with other Lebanese outside Mina, and to recent efforts made to change the name of the neighbourhood.

KarKar is a short film about a fishmonger named Abed Ibri in Saida, the south of Lebanon, and his pet pelican who is semi-famous in the region. The film provides a glimpse of how they came to be a pair, how daily life is for Abed and KarKar, and how this pelican has become a landmark of Saida.

For a long time, I was sure Lebanon was in the sky.

I was, I think, five years old and unaware of an already-decade-long civil war when I first left Lagos for Beirut. I remember flashes here and there.... [ Show More ]

At the end of 2015, I began working with photographer Cyrile Karam on a gaming in Lebanon photo series. We spent a few nights with the country's best League of Legends team.... [ Show More ]
